OFCOM withdraw 418 MHz frequency

Published 27th September 2007

OFCOM (the independent regulator of the UK radio spectrum) will be withdrawing the 418 MHz frequency on 31 December 2007. This is to make way for TETRA systems (Terrestrial Trunked Radio), the communication system used by the emergency services. This will effect some of our customers as:

· This frequency has been used for portable pendant transmitters on some of our earlier Concept warden call systems.

· Due to the frequency being withdrawn by OFCOM, manufacturers are no longer able to supply 418MHz pendants or receivers after 31 December 2007.

· 418 MHz pendants are still available for purchase up until 31 December 2007, although we have finite stocks

· Although you can continue to use 418 MHz systems after 31 December 2007, there is a risk of failure: if Tetra transmitters are installed nearby, radio transmissions from the pendant could be blocked, preventing an alarm call from being raised.

The solution

Chubb Community Care can provide a system upgrade to Concept systems to utilise 869MHz, a frequency dedicated soley to social alarms and telecare throughout europe. This frequency was allocated by OFCOM to minimise the risks of radio interference from other radio sources such as TETRA.

This upgrade also provides the capability to use a full range of telecare devices eg. Pendants, bogus caller buttons, heat detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, low temperature alarms, pill dispensers, flood alerts, bed occupancy sensors, etc.
