Wales and West Taking Care with Chubb

Wales and West Housing Association carried out an in-depth review of its sheltered housing Scheme Manager provision, to identify and implement a range of equipment to provide new benefits to its clients.

Following this review and tender process, Chubb Community Care was appointed as their preferred supplier to upgrade and replace the Association’s entire scheme-end sheltered housing equipment over the next two years. The equipment is being replaced for all residential Scheme Manager sites in three phases.

Jackie Edwards, Customer Service Centre Manager, said “the Association has chosen Chubb’s Concept Plus equipment, which gives the Scheme Managers the ability to cover more than one scheme directly from their office equipment or their telephone at one site. Part of the sheltered housing review has meant that we are moving towards providing non-residential Scheme Managers who may be asked to manage more than one site, so this facility is vital for that process.��?

In addition, the Association is offering carephones to many of its older and vulnerable general-needs residents and chose Chubb’s IntelliLink unit.

Jackie explained “residents are happy with this new service provision. A recent installation in Cardiff was for Mrs Violet Perkins who has mobility problems and, with her husband in hospital, was concerned that she wouldn’t be able to contact anyone if she had a problem. She has an IntelliLink unit with a pendant for emergencies and the Control Room contacts her everyday to check on her well-being. Her family is happy with the new service and knows that the Control Room will contact them if any problems develop or if she has a fall. The IntelliLink unit is telecare-ready, easily allowing more vulnerable clients to be provided with tailored equipment packages to allow them to remain independent longer within their own homes.

Sue Crook, who manages two schemes in Cardiff, is delighted with the Concept Plus system. Sue said “I can contact all my residents from one site first thing in the morning and sort out any problems over the telephone with Social Services or the GP surgeries at the appropriate time. My scheduled visits for both sites are then allocated within my working schedule. I work at one scheme during the morning and the other during the afternoon and alternate this every week. If an emergency arises at the one scheme, I can travel to the other within ten minutes. I am looking forward to moving off site when my new house is ready!��?

Betty Roberts, one of the Association’s North Wales Scheme Managers also appreciates the Concept Plus equipment as she has been covering additional schemes along the North Wales coast for long-term sickness cover. She can now make calls from her own scheme and only has to travel to the other sites for emergencies. An additional benefit is the provision of a DECT cordless handset, which allows her to answer telephone calls as well as alarm calls giving her the freedom to move around the scheme rather than having to return to the office to check the answerphone.

Jackie concluded “most recently, Chubb has worked in partnership with the Association to deliver a range of solutions allowing us to seek additional grants from the Welsh Assembly Government. This will allow us to provide telecare enhancements for our deaf, hard-of-hearing and special needs clients.��?
