Telecare in Rehabilitation Environments, Your Homes Newcastle

The Community Care Alarm Service “CCAS” at Your Homes Newcastle is undertaking an exciting project with Chubb, promoting independent living for
the people of Newcastle and improving the allocation of valuable resources in health and social services.

CCAS identified an opportunity to use Telecare in rehabilitation environments, easing people through the transition between hospital care and home. Using Telecare in this supported environment will give many people the confidence to use the equipment at home, enabling them to return home sooner and live independently for longer. With staff able to see the benefits first-hand, it is hoped that both health and social services will gain even more confidence in Telecare and the overall usage of Telecare will increase.

CCAS identified the ‘Carer Alert’ as part of a solution for rehab centres, and selected a Social Services rehab unit to trial the project. Chirton Resource Centre use a mix of health and social care disciplines to help people return home, providing the perfect platform to raise awareness of Telecare across the sector.

Each person in the unit uses a care sensor and pendant, and some also use a medication dispenser, an enuresis device or a multi switch according to their needs. Each site uses enough Carer Alerts to monitor these devices and pagers to relay alerts to night shift staff.

As part of the project outcome, many people will be given free Telecare for 6 weeks after they have been discharged from rehab, so they can trial the equipment in their own home and consider using the service long-term.

In addition to training from Chubb and support from CCAS’ specialist Telecare Consultants, the rehab units have made arrangements to monitor the effects of Telecare on the people in their care:

  • Number of people using Telecare on-site
  • Which Telecare items are being used
  • How many people are discharged with Telecare
  • How many people are able to remain at home 6 weeks after discharge

With the individual and social benefits Telecare brings, the future of care in Newcastle is looking very bright.
