Solihull MBC - Warden Services Review
Solihull MBC made a decision to review the warden service when it became known that “Best Value? and “Excellence Assessments? would be inherent factors in the future direction and shape of the service.
The aim of the review was to provide an alarm service that would be future proof, could be developed to suit individuals needs and would use flexible technology to enable the Housing and Regeneration to extend the Supported Housing service.
Solihull MBC was looking for a simple but effective solution. The technology chosen had to allow a flexible, responsive support service to be delivered reliably and cost effectively. The goal was to be innovative, client needs led and most importantly capable of extending the service to older and disabled people in the wider community. The decision was to replace the existing warden call system with a solution that provided cost effective installation, flexibility in staffing and lower maintenance in the long term.
The equipment chosen for the project after an eighteen month review, was the Horizon unit. This was the only unit on the market
that met all the parameters for providing a flexible, best value service.
Denise Galletly, Elderly Services Manager said “the technology chosen supports a more flexible, mobile service. The Supported Housing Team now has no resident warden and the same number of posts are now all mobile. This enables the Supported Housing Team to tailor service to individuals which in turn creates the resource required to extend the service to reach the wider community previously not linked to the service.?
“Over time, these changes are helping the service to meet the requirements of Supporting People and the National Service
framework for Older People. In addition, it is better placed to respond to Government initiatives requiring working in partnership with other departments and organisations i.e. NHS Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, Social Services and Police.?
