South Beds Group

South Beds Group

South Bedfordshire District Council and Bedfordshire County Council Social Services have been working together to provide the latest in Assistive Technology to the residents of South Beds.

Two SMART flats in South Beds District Council’s Sheltered Schemes, one in Dunstable and one in Leighton Buzzard, have been equipped to provide extra security for people who are in need of short term respite care. The equipment is also for use in the daily lives of vulnerable people.

The launch of this innovative project took place at Croft Green in Dunstable on Friday 7 October. It was well attended with representatives from both councils, the Primary Care Trust, the Mental Health Service, social workers, occupational therapists and local residents.

Malcolm Mitchell, Chairman of the Dunstable and District Association of Senior Citizens said: “This is quite an eye opener. It will encourage people to stay in their homes longer. The idea of SMART flats is first class and I would like to see more of them. We thoroughly endorse them. Good luck to the council who is light years ahead on this project.?

Helen Keel, Careline Manager at South Beds District Council said: “By working in partnership with the Social Services, Health Authorities, Housing Associations and the Private and Public Sector we are fulfilling the Government’s requirement regarding the care and protection of vulnerable people. Our Careline service benefits all vulnerable people in the community, regardless of their age. Without the Assistive Technology devices, a service user can still contact the Control Centre, using the Careline Unit, for reassurance or assistance.?

The Assistive Technology chosen for this project was supplied by Chubb Community Care, Julian Kuczala, Regional Sales Manager said: “Chubb Community Care have been working with South Bedfordshire District Council over the past 20 years, we are proud to have been chosen to help manager their new Telecare project and to be with them on the Launch of their Smart House at Croft Green?
