Lifestyle Monitoring from Chubb helps Fife Council support Vunerable Residents
Quietcare Lifestyle Monitoring from Chubb Community Care, one of the UK’s leading providers of social alarm and telecare services, is helping Fife Council identify and assess the needs of dementia patients to provide them with the most appropriate care. Chubb is part of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
Quietcare enables care professionals to make objective assessments and to prioritise and target resources, thus improving the quality and efficiency of the care they provide. It can be used to monitor bathroom usage, meal preparation, interaction and medication, sleeping patterns and overall activity levels.
The Quietcare System has been adopted by Fife Council’s Telecare department to help determine appropriate care intervention for vulnerable people under its care, in order to enable people to live with greater independence and safety in their own homes.
Movement detectors are discreetly positioned throughout a person’s home to collect data on their activities of daily living, usually over a 14-day assessment period. The movement detectors wirelessly transmit activities of daily living to a base station where the data is stored prior to analysis.
“This system has been extremely valuable in providing specific data on the activity patterns of my service user,” said Ailsa Dow, Senior Consultant at New City House in Dunfermline, who led a trial of lifestyle monitoring. “The family [of the service user] had been concerned about the client during the night and medication had been stopped by the consultant. After a meeting with the consultant to provide the results of the data to evidence how unsettled he was through the night, the consultant agreed to trial a new drug for him.”
Fife Social worker Yvonne Batchelor has similarly used the system to identify a service user’s care needs. “I first heard of this system when attending Telecare Assessor training and thought this may be useful in addressing some concerns I and the family had for a service user. The main issues being the family thought their mother was not going to bed at night and were concerned she was not receiving sufficient rest, which may have been adding to her confusion.
“The service user was not keen to have a stranger stay with her in her home in order to undertake an assessment. In fact this option was likely to raise anxiety and had the potential to give a false indication of her sleep pattern.
“The Quietcare system was installed as a 14-day assessment tool and immediately identified that the service user was going to bed at night and sleeping a full night. The system also identified the need for additional telecare equipment, which would help support her wish to remain living independently in the community. I am a convert to Telecare and can see how this technology can be of huge benefit to support the assessment of service users alongside existing care resources,” Yvonne concludes.
Quietcare is simple to install and plugs into the client’s telephone and electrical supply. The base unit dials into the Quietcare computer and downloads the data. Using sophisticated algorithms, the system analyses the row motion data and automatically develops a normal daily routine for the user. Noteworthy changes are then identified and reports generated via a secure internet connection, alerts can be delivered by emails, pager or via a control centre.
Chubb Community Care is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers, suppliers and installers of innovative products and services designed to empower the individual, promote independence and enhance quality of life for older, vulnerable and disabled people.
