Enhanced Telecare for Sandwell MBC
Following the success of a pilot project, a comprehensive telecare service was rolled out across the entire Sandwell borough, protecting vulnerable people and assisting carers
The overall objective was to enhance and extend the community alarm network already in place, whilst meeting further carefully defined objectives: to enable people to stay at home; to support timely discharge from hospital; to provide focussed support for carers, and to aid people who fall and implement prevention strategies.
Designed for swift reaction to any problem and to efficiently mobilise the most appropriate response, the Horizon telecare system has led to increased confidence and reduced anxiety for users who can now live independently and safely within the community.
For carers it provides comprehensive risk management through on-going monitoring and evaluation. Horizon provides hands-free two way speech for ‘conference calls’ between the user, the operator and a third party such as a doctor and monitors a range of sensors in the home, identifying alarm situations and reporting details to the monitoring service
Extensive awareness training also helps practitioners to assess the needs of vulnerable people and fully appreciate the excellent options offered by telecare.
The ease of programming and functionality of the Horizon Home Care unit already in place at the Community Alarm Centre, and the ability to assess the positive impact of assistive technology, have proved invaluable in a making the project a complete success.
