Chestercare Falls Prevention

Mr Cooper Chestercare

In early 2004 Cheshire County Council began a falls prevention pilot project within the county. Chestercare – one of Cheshire’s premier control centres took on this task working with Chubb to develop their successful Falls project.

One of the recipients of Chestercare’s Falls equipment packages was Mr Cooper. Mr Cooper aged 75 had lost the use of his legs to a great extent due to a fall in 2002 and is reliant on an electric wheel chair to move around his home, at one stage Mr Cooper had 10 falls in 9 weeks.

The Falls equipment provided was the Horizon+ carephone complete with the telecare Accept pendant and Bed Occupancy sensor with Light.

The bed occupancy sensor is designed to work in two ways, firstly should the occupant get up in the night a lamp is automatically switched on eliminating the need to perform any task in the dark and a second function is to place a call to the control centre after a set period of time should the occupant not return to bed – a function that was proved almost immediately when a potentially dangerous situation was avoided due to the equipment.

Mr Cooper rose at 1am to visit the toilet, a fault in his electric wheelchair affected the manoeuvring motors and he was trapped against a cupboard with no means of moving or calling for help. Mr Cooper would have been stranded, panicked & cold until at least 9am when a carer was due to visit however when he didn’t return to bed within 20 minutes the telecare sensor automatically placed a call to Chestercare and within 10 minutes of the call, an ambulance was on the scene.

Mr Cooper was overjoyed with the equipment and the Chestercare service. Mr Cooper said ‘This equipment has given me a lot more confidence and allowed me to stay in my own home’
