A Helping Hand At Home in North Tyneside
New technology is helping people across the Borough of North Tyneside stay in their own homes and lead independent lives.
North Tyneside Council has introduced a Telecare system, which works through a range of unobtrusive sensors being placed around the home. They raise an alert if they detect a possible problem and a response is triggered from either Care Call or the person’s carer.
Among those benefiting from the system is Claire Nichols, who is diabetic and a wheelchair user. Claire, 34, of Whitley Bay, had previously fallen from her wheelchair while suffering a ‘hypo’, which is where the level of sugar in the blood drops below a certain point. She was given a fall detector neck chain to wear in case it happened again. Just three days later, Claire suffered viral encephalitis – a swelling of the brain – and fell from her wheelchair. Her mother was alerted and went to Claire’s home where she found her unconscious at the bottom of the stairs.
Claire said: “Having this new system gives everyone peace of mind. I know now that if anything happens, then I will be okay. In the past my mam has always been worried about me being at home by myself but now she isn’t.”
Telecare is helping Wendy Berentsen care for her father, Bill Stephenson, 86, at her home in Wallsend. Bill gets confused and is unsteady on his feet. He suffered a broken hip and elbow when he fell while in North Tyneside General Hospital for treatment to an infection. Before returning home, a care sensor was installed above his bed to alert Wendy if he was trying to get up. He was also given a pendant so he could contact Wendy anywhere in the property
or garden if he needed help.
Wendy, 61, said: “One of the consultants at hospital more or less said he might have to go into a nursing home and I was very
strongly against that.
“I wanted to look after him myself and felt it was important for him to be at home. Telecare is a great system and I would recommend it to others.”
