Chubb Helps Carer and Care User in Hull
Chubb Community Care is working with Hull City Council to support a 30-year old epilepsy sufferer and his family with Chubb’s Carer Alert and Epilepsy sensor technology. Chubb is part of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
Daniel has severe epilepsy and has up to 14 seizures each week – most of which occur during his sleep or upon first waking. He is cared for full-time by his parents, both of whom work. Adding further strain to the family, Daniel’s mother also provides care for her father, who suffers from dementia, and her mother, who has a long-term illness.
As Daniel’s seizures frequently occur while he sleeps, ensuring his safety throughout the night is a top priority for his parents. Yet this is a challenge. Daniel’s father is a taxi driver and typically works at night, so his mother is the main carer during this time. In the past, she had used baby monitors to
check on Daniel, but this approach proved to be highly inefficient. As a result, Daniel’s parents soon found themselves spending most of the night awake, listening.
Before long, Daniel was introduced to Mike Burton, Hull City Council’s Telecare Implementation Manager. Although Daniel’s parents had initially met with Mike to discuss the needs of Daniel’s Grandfather Mike felt that readily available technology could provide Daniel with greater independence and help his family achieve peace of mind.
Mike arranged for a Carer Alert system from Chubb Community Care to be fitted at the home with an epilepsy sensor. This technology reliably detects when Daniel is having a seizure and then sends an alarm through the Carer Alert system to notify his parents.
The Chubb epilepsy sensor is designed to detect Tonic-Clonic (Grand Mal) seizure types. It features a detector equipped with a movement sensor that is positioned between the bed base and mattress to detect any convulsions in the form or shaking or jerking movements.
The sensor has an adjustable level control with a movement detect confirmation LED. A further control, delay, is used to minimise false alarms caused by normal movements during sleep. Using these controls, it is possible to fine-tune operation of the monitor to suit most bed types and convulsive seizure types. A built-in microphone also can be used to detect grunting or groaning sounds that sometimes precede a seizure in adult males. Again, an adjustable sensitivity control allows the correct level to be set.
This development means that Daniel’s parents can now sleep soundly in the knowledge that the Carer Alert will raise the alarm if Daniel has a seizure. They also make use of an additional pager, which allows them greater movement around the house and garden, knowing that if Daniel has a seizure, they will be alerted immediately.
The entire family is delighted with Chubb’s system, especially Daniel. “The technology has given me greater independence,” he said. “I can now go on my computer or spend time in my room without my parents needing to check on me all the time.”
