Gateshead Council - Bedroom Exit Alarm
Mr and Mrs Smith are in their late 70’s, Mr Smith has poor health and his wife has dementia. Mrs Smith was prone to falling especially at night when she goes to the bathroom, due to this, Mr Smith had set up his own alarm system that would wake him up when Mrs Smith left her bedroom.
Mr Smith had set up a system using nuts and bolts which were in a metal box that was tied to a piece of string to his wife’s bedroom door. If his wife opened the bedroom door the clatter of the nuts and bolts would wake him up and he was then able to see to his wife and put her back to bed. This seemed to work but Mr Smith was not getting a good quality of sleep.
The situation was brought to the attention of Gateshead Community Based Services who offered a bedroom exit alarm combined with the Chubb Carer Alert to Mr Smith.
How this worked is that door contacts were fitted to Mrs Smith’s bedroom, when she left her bedroom at night, an alarm would sound at the Carer Alert which was kept in Mr Smith’s bedroom. This would then allow Mr Smith to help his wife and put her safely to bed. It was also identified that while Mrs Smith was having afternoon naps, Mr Smith would have to stay indoors and close by incase his wife woke up. In order to give Mr Smith independence, a pager was also provided which would alert him if Mrs Smith left the bedroom. This pager allowed Mr Smith to roam freely around his property and also in the garden safe in the knowledge that if Mrs Smith did wake up and leave the bedroom he would be alerted and could go and check on her.
Mr Smith said “This technology has not only given me some of my independence back but also allows me to get a deeper sleep safe in the knowledge that if my wife leaves the bedroom I will be woken up and can go and make sure that she is OK”
