84 year old Gentleman Falls Case Study Warrington Borough Council
Thomas an 84 year old gentleman who lives with his daughter and family in their bungalow but is suffering from short term memory loss and repeated falls.
The main issues for the family is that during the night Thomas gets up several times and is having repeated falls, the only way his daughter feels she can minimize this is to sleep with her and Thomas’s bedroom doors open so that she can see and hear him attempting to get out of bed.
Warrington Carecall Community Services conducted at telecare assessment and recommended that the Chubb Carer Alert and a Pressure on sensor and pressure mat was installed.
The sensor was fitted at the side of Thomas’s bed which activates the Carer Alert as soon as Thomas puts his legs out of bed onto the pressure mat so enabling his daughter to get to him before he puts himself at risk of falling.
The equipment was installed in March 2008 and has greatly reduced the number of falls Thomas has suffered. His daughter said she couldn’t praise the equipment highly enough, since it was installed they can now sleep with the bedroom doors closed – so giving everyone some much needed privacy
and she is getting more quality sleep knowing that the Carer Alert will wake her if Thomas attempts to get out of bed. It has made a huge improvement to
everyone’s quality of life.
